How can an independent-minded value investor with a day job find good companies in a market like this? We all know that there are good values out there today and that we should find them before the rest of the market does. The trouble is that it takes a long time to do a good job of fundamental analysis. At the Pub this week, come learn from Dr. Bob Smithson from Anava Corporation about pattern recognition and how to deal with these questions.

The Internet makes the necessary information available to anyone, but while it is easy to find out about a particular company, it is hard to know which companies out of thousands of possibilities you should be looking at. You cannot type in 8,000 different symbols on the NASDAQ web page. Pattern recognition technology, working from examples alone, can allow an investor to find interesting investment candidates in minutes, using fundamental screening techniques. There is no need for the investor to specify particular screening criteria. The methods developed by Anava can provide immediate answers to questions like, "Can you find me some companies that look now like what Cisco looked like two years ago, but in biotech?" The speed of the method allows a fundamental investor to adjust a portfolio to follow changing market conditions with a minimal investment of time and effort. It forms the basis for "Investor's Aide," a new software product from Anava Corporation.

Robert C. Smithson is the President and Chief Executive Officer of Anava. Dr. Smithson founded the company with two other members of the Lockheed Research Labs to commercialize technology licensed to them by Lockheed. For the first five years, the company was a custom software and consulting company. In the last year, concentration has been on products to aid decision-making for fundamental investors. Prior to Anava, Dr. Smithson worked at Lockeed Martin Missiles & Space in various positions since 1971. He holds a Ph.D. in physics from California Institute of Technology and a B.S. in Physics from the University of Washington.

Anava Corporation intends to become the leading supplier of a new class of tools for investment analysis and risk management. Anava applies advanced analysis techniques to give its customers far better performance and ease of use than competing products.
