"LATEST HOT TRENDS: ACTIVITIES AT SAP CORPORATE RESEARCH"

At this Pub Talk, Richard Swan will share with those in attendance the latest activities at SAP
Corporate Research.
ABOUT RICHARD SWAN
Richard Swan is currently the Director of Research for SAP's Corporate Research Center at SAP
Labs in Palo Alto. Dr. Swan's research interests are in the area of mobile and pervasive technology,
including voice, and their impact on enterprise applications. Richard Swan holds a Ph.D. in
Computer Science from Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) where he held the position of Assistant
Professor. While at CMU, Dr. Swan developed the CM* multiprocessor system, the largest of its
day and the first to be fully extensible in memory, processing power and communications.
As Vice President of Engineering at Megatest Corporation, (later Teradyne) he developed the
MegaOne, a VLSI test system. This pioneered a "tester-per-pin" software-friendly architectural
approach that has been widely emulated. At Digital Equipment Corporation, Dr. Swan led the
Western Research Laboratory (WRL) and also founded the Network System Laboratory (NSL).
Research areas included high performance computing, VLSI tools, IP networking, and web
experiments such as the City of Palo Alto web presence and the first web bookstore. Alta Vista and
the PAIX were both outgrowths of this activity. Richard is a founder of RouteOne, a venture to
establish digital delivery of video advertising to TV stations and founder and CEO of Tuross
Corporation, a small technology consulting organization. While at Tuross, Dr. Swan architected a
BSkyB compliant Digital Set top box that has sold more than 1 million units and semiconductor test
equipment used for over a $1B in annual shipments. At Cadence, Richard led the design of mobile
information appliances for outside clients. Dr. Swan is a native of Australia and appreciates beer and
wine from all countries.
