"THE DISAPPEARING COMPUTER:
A EUROPEAN PERSPECTIVE ON
UBIQUITOUS COMPUTING" by Dr. Friedemann Mattern, Department
of
Computer Science, Institute of Information Systems, Swiss Federal
Institute of Technology)
The Internet is evolving. Now we
begin with the Mobile Internet and in a few years we will have billions
of embedded devices communicating over the Internet. "Networking
all things" is one of the ultimate goals of 'Ubiquitous
Computing.' It seems, however, that mobile access to the Internet
is more a European than an American vision and Europe has a small
advantage in technologies, including GSM for mobile phones and smart
cards to enhance security. On the other hand, there is much more
concern in Europe about privacy issues than in the US and certainly
privacy will be of prime concern with Ubiquitous Computing. Currently
there are several European Ubiquitous Computing initiatives.
The Pub talk will address Ubiquitous Computing and describe
the goals of one or two of those "Disappearing Computer"
programs.
