THINK TANK SESSION: WEDNESDAY, MARCH 3, 2004
"SENSOR NETWORKS IN THE TRUCKING INDUSTRY: ENHANCING HOMELAND SECURITY"

1:30 - 5:30 p.m. Invitation-only.

In light of the events of September 11, 2001, enhancing the security of transportation and shipping in the United States is of high priority. This increased need for security comes at a time when truck crossings at U.S. borders have grown significantly from 2.7 million in 1994 to 4.3 million in 2001.

Tracking safe content in trucks, let alone identifying hazardous materials, forms the challenge to the California Highway Patrol and the California Trucking Association. Assuring the timely delivery of goods remains foremost in the minds of the trucking industry. Arriving at a solution that will enhance national security, while not hobbling the efficient flow of transportation, is key.

Sensor and control technologies have revolutionized what is known as the "Intelligent Transportation" arena. Applying sensor equipment to trucks, transportation facilities and transportation infrastructure such as inspection facilities and checkpoints raises the level of security and safety through enhanced information gathering and analysis. Sensor equipment could include threat sensors (e.g. chemical agent, toxic industrial chemical, biological, explosives, and radiological sensors), object detection (e.g. metal detectors), intrusion or motion detection, and infrastructure integrity monitoring (e.g. border cross checking).

This Think Tank Session will focus around the use of sensors and sensor networks to enhance safety and security in the trucking industry. SAP, a Corporate Sponsor of the Center, is hosting this session.

The Think Tank Session is designed to elicit the following:

  • Outline specific security measures which the trucking industry must adhere to in the State of California
  • Delineate the needs, concerns and requirements of the trucking industry in adhering to such security measures
  • Explore the feasibility of employing sensors and sensor networks for asset tracking and management

The proceedings of this session will be shared with the participants. This is part of a series of sessions around technology innovation in the area of Homeland Security.

CENTER ANNOUNCEMENT: 2004 CORPORATE SPONSORSHIP PROGRAM
"INVIGORATING HIGH TECH INNOVATION"

The Silicon Valley World Internet Center is pleased to announce its 2004 Corporate Sponsorship Program, whose objective is to provide a powerful and effective center - a third-party forum and nexus of innovators - for clients from Internet- and communications-based industries, governments and enterprise end-users to explore near- and medium-term solutions for advanced communications, business processes and security.

The Corporate Sponsorship Program has a $9,900 annual fee. The Corporate Sponsorship Program will deliver series of multi-organizational sessions, open to the public, around such topics as business applications for sensor networks, RFID applications for supply chain management, future of wireless broadband, convergence of nano- and biotechnology with IT, among other cutting edge topics. The Sponsorship Program will also highlight key advances made by members of the program, bringing innovations into a multi-corporate community of developers and end-users.

In November 2003, the Silicon Valley World Internet Center announced SAP Corporate Research as the first member of the Corporate Sponsorship Program. "As we look to 2004, our objective is to leverage the collective and collaborative weight of about 30 industry and government leaders to support technology, communications, and eBusiness evolution in an open, yet critical multi-organizational environment. Having SAP Corporate Research lead that challenge is a great first step," said Dr. Susan Duggan, CEO of the Silicon Valley World Internet Center.

"We need to embrace, anew, the collaborative nature of innovation," says Dr. Joachim Schaper, vice president of SAP Corporate Research Americas. "Our partners -large and small-should join Susan Duggan and the World Internet Center in moving the pace and quality of innovation forward in the Silicon Valley. SAP Corporate Research calls for other enterprises, governments, and end-users to join us in this challenge to focus the next generation of innovation around the Internet and communications."
