We are all waiting for the RFID adoption curve to take off and
for RFID tags to surpass bar code labels as the universal standard
for tracking inventory. We all can see the marginal value that is
provided by RFID over Bar Code alone. Still, the adoption of RFID
tags at the global scale of bar codes has yet to happen. Mr. Dean
Frew, Managing Partner of Incucomm, Inc., a Knowledge Network Partner
of the World Internet Center, will put forth his ideas about the
future of reality of the RFID tag development and examine just when
and how the high point of the growth curve will come about. Mr.
Frew will present a pragmatic view of what is missing in the value
chain for adoption to take off. He will consider some less obvious
elements of the value chain and will also provide an customer-based
opinion on which of the different "flavors" will likely be successful
and where.
Please come join the Challenge-the-Expert session to "challenge"
Mr. Frew and to contribute to shaping strategic thinking around
the RFID tag market.

Cable
& Wireless, an Executive Sponsor of the Center, would like to share
two recent announcements with the Center's online community:
1) "How Content Delivery Services
Can Boost Website Performance"
For
further information (http://www.cw.com/template_05.jsp?ID=story_281002_performance).
Corporate Websites are becoming increasingly important customer
'touchpoints' as the use of the Internet and eCommerce grows, says
a new online seminar featuring Gartner Research Director Mr. Rob
Batchelder. Technologies such as content delivery networks are therefore
crucial to an organization's effort to support its brand and manage
the customer experience.
Services such as Cable & Wireless Content Delivery enable customers
to store and deliver Web content from servers that are 'closer'
to users. The Web pages that the user wants to view load faster
- leading to faster, more reliable, and more consistent service
which can impact user satisfaction and customer loyalty. This is
achieved by storing copies of a customer's content on Cable & Wireless'
network of servers deployed
at the 'edge' of the Internet and around the world. Requests made
to the customer's origin server for pages are redirected to these
edge servers, meaning traffic does not have to travel over as many
Internet backbones and the customer's content is served more quickly.
And, because content is stored across the Cable & Wireless network
and delivered from edge servers, the load on the customer's origin
servers is reduced, enabling them to better cope with surges in
demand.
To register for a free seminar and white paper, visit (http://www.cw.com/template_05.jsp?ID=story_281002_performance).
2) "Cable & Wireless Enables Global
Efficiencies for the Pearson Group"
For
further information (http://www.cw.com/template_05.jsp?ID=story_171002_pearson).
International
media group Pearson needed to rationalize its disparate web infrastructure.
The company needed a single global service provider that could meet
a comprehensive set of requirements across all of its business units
and geographies. Cable & Wireless was one of only a few contenders
that could meet these criteria. It provided a global solution which
helped Pearson reduce costs, improve reliability, and set a group-wide
standard.

Center
7:00 p.m. Open to the Public. No Fee.
Not held at the Center. Please Note Special Location.
Held at Cypress Semiconductor, 198 Champion Court, Building 6, San
Jose
In collaboration with the Silicon Valley Web Guild (www.webguild.org),
the World Internet Center would like to invite you to a special
presentation by Dr. Bob Glass, Fellow of the Center, on Monday,
April 7, 2003, at 7:00 p.m. in San Jose (Please note special location.)
The topic will be:
"Are We There Yet? A Look at Technology and Where We Expected
to be by Now"
In 1992, "Dr. Bob" and his team at Sun Microsystems embarked on
trying to envision the future with the hopes of trying to figure
out where technology was headed. Two years later, "Starfire" - a
Vision of the future was released. Starfire was a look at the world
of 2004 (from the vantage point of 1992-1994) and an attempt to
create a "video prototype." The team felt that by creating a short
video, the user experience of a corporate customer could be better
developed. At the time the film was developed and released (1992-1994),
there was no common knowledge of the Internet or widespread use
of email, yet these items are forecasted in the film.
Join Dr. Bob as he takes a glance at the future through the past.
The film is 25 minutes in length and offers an amusing peek at where
we should be by now... Are we there yet?
This special presentation will be held at Cypress Semiconductor,
198 Champion Court, Building 6, San Jose, CA 95134. There is no
fee for attending. However, the favor of a reply would be most appreciated.
To register in advance, please contact
Ms. Claire Kahrobaie
Manager, Client Services
T: 650.462.9800
E: kahrobaie@worldinternetcenter.com
We look forward to welcoming you to this interesting look back
into the future!
