PUB TALK: THURSDAY, MAY 2, 2002
"Sniffing Packets to Protect Your 802.11 Network"
By Mr. Brian Mansfield, Founder & Chief Wireless Consultant, The
Mansfield Group, LLC
Open to the Public. 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. The Pub talk begins at 6:00
p.m.
Security vulnerabilities inherent within 802.11 networks are well
documented. Hardware manufacturers, software vendors, and standards
groups are moving quickly to solve these issues. 802.1x authentication,
AES encryption, TKIP, MIC, and EAP-TLS are just some of the security
fixes companies are deploying in order to safeguard their 802.11
networks. WLAN sniffers and 802.11 protocol analyzers represent
important tools that help mitigate security breaches against wireless
LANs.
At this Pub, Mr. Mansfield will discuss the progress being made
in WLAN security, the solutions being deployed in the marketplace,
and the wireless LAN sniffer and protocol analyzer programs. Mr.
Mansfield will also give a demo of the packet sniffing programs.
Those who attend the Pub will benefit by receiving a special code
for a reduced fee for the May 16th Wireless LAN Security Workshop
in Burlingame (further information below).

WORKING
GROUP SESSION: WEDNESDAY, MAY 8, 2002
"The
Challenge for Biotech: Shaping the Future of Clinical Trials"
Invitation-only. 3:00 - 5:30 p.m.
Moderated by
Dr. C. Budd Colby, Colby Biomedical Consultants
The objective
of the Working Group session is to gather 8-10 thought leaders to
exchange knowledge on the pain points (challenges) currently faced
by biotech companies in structuring and processing clinical trials.
The solutions biotech companies are using to meet these challenges
will also be discussed as well as what critical technology solutions
are still needed.
The pace of
new drug development and rapid growth of biotech companies means
a surge in clinical trials -- the expensive and time consuming process
of testing medical drugs. Clinical trials, occurring in three overlapping
phases and last several years each, are used not only to demonstrate
the drug's efficacy, but also to determine its risks and side effects,
measure effective doses, test various methods for delivering the
drug, and even experiment with different manufacturing methods.
The right strategic business decisions and compliance with the U.S.
Food and Drug Administration's Center for Drug and Evaluation Research
(CDER) are key to the success of clinical trials, inevitably getting
new drugs to the U.S. market. With the rapid pace of new drug development
and plethora of biotech companies, what is the impact on the structure
and process of clinical trials?
The following
questions, among others, will be discussed at this Working Group
over wine and light hors d'oeuvres:
What
are the most felt pain points (challenges) faced by biotech companies
with structuring and processing clinical trials in:
1) Patient acquisition and case management;
2) Data acquisition, storage, retrieval, and mining; and
3) Data analysis.
What technology solutions are biotech companies using to
address these pain points?
What technology solutions are critically needed that to do
not currently exist?
FOR
FURTHER INFORMATION

Working Group session is invitation-only. Individuals who are interested

WORKING
GROUP SESSION: WEDNESDAY, MAY 22, 2002
"Business
Rules in Mapping"
Third session of a Working Group on "Dynamic Information
Integration"
Invitation-only. 3:00 - 5:30 p.m.
As a result
of a series of programs last fall, the Center is hosting a Working
Group session during winter and spring 2002 on "Dynamic Information
Integration." A group of 10-12 continuing participants will
analyze and discuss various aspects of dynamic information integration
over the next several months, including:
The role
and importance of explicit models
How to achieve a working feedback loop
Existing technologies and components
Relevant standards
THIRD WORKING GROUP SESSION
The third Working Group session on May 22 will focus on "Business
Rules in Mapping." When integrating systems and data, mapping
between taxonomies often becomes necessary. However, in some cases
a static mapping of objects in one taxonomy to objects in another
taxonomy is not sufficient. Rather, the case is that business rules
have to be applied during mapping. The following illustrates this
situation. A credit check is offered as a Web Service and requires
the DUNS number and credit amount as input parameters. An ERP system
with its own way of numbering customers will be calling the credit
check service. A mapping between the customer ID of the ERP system
and the DUNS number thus becomes necessary. But this simple, static
mapping may not be enough. For example, agreements may exist that
a parent company takes over payment responsibilities for certain
subsidiaries or different forms of bank guarantees are in place,
complicating the necessary mapping.
The following
questions -- among others -- will be discussed over wine and light
hors d'oeuvres:
Is there
a need for a generic solution to combine data mapping with business
rules? In what sort of situations is this needed?
Do systematic approaches to this problem exist?
How can rules be generated and maintained efficiently?

In summer 2001, the Center designed and produced a series of Think
Tank Sessions on mobile commerce. Topics ranged from market opportunities,
to who or what is driving the industry, to a drill-down look at
the nature of and markets for mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs).
Although the focus of the three sessions was the U.S. market, interesting
lessons and models lie in the work being done by telcos as well
as wireless and mobile companies in Europe and Asia.
In fall 2001, the Center produced a two-part series on data and
information integration. The series began with a Think Tank Session
entitled "Artificial Intelligence (AI): Is It Real? AI &
Supply Chain Management." Participants examined the usefulness
of AI and agent technology in analyzing and quantifying data for
efficient business decision-making. Later, the Center's Symposium,
"Data-to-Cash: Business Opportunities Emerging from an Ocean
of Data," delved into the subject of mining relevant information
from the plethora of data afforded to businesses from technology.
On March 13, 2002, the Center produced a Think Tank Session to
examine the state of business needs in the health care industry.
Specifically, this program focused on the most critical technology-
and business-related pressure points (challenges) of small- and
medium-sized healthcare organizations (HCOs) as well as for the
system integrators (ISIs) and software vendors (ISVs) that interact
directly with HCOs. In addition, the session addressed the impact
of the Health Insurance Portability and Accessibility Act (HIPAA)
on the pushing the industry towards digitizing patient and other
data.
