***PUB TALK: THURSDAY, MAY 31, 2001
"PRIVACY ISN'T JUST THE LAW, IT'S ALSO A GOOD IDEA!"

By Mr. David Singer, Program Director & Senior Technical Staff Member of Web Technology,
Academy of Technology, IBM Almaden Research Center
5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Open to the Public. No fee. The Pub Talk begins at 6:00 p.m.

Privacy isn't just the law, it's also a good idea. When you ask your customers or visitors for information, do you explain what you do with it? How do you make sure that the promises you make to your customers are honored? Do your visitors feel safe giving you information, or are half of your hits from "noneofyourbusiness@goaway.org"? You are not alone in asking these questions -- IBM has faced them, too. IBM's privacy policies, practices, and services have evolved over the years in response to the changing Internet environment -- Mr. Singer will talk about these changes and IBM's perspective on privacy in a Web-based world.

ABOUT DAVID SINGER

David Singer, Program Director and Senior Technical Staff Member for Web Technology, works for IBM's Internet Technology team on the use of Internet technology, particularly the Web, as a way of promoting community and communication, especially within enterprises such as IBM. He was part of the IBM team which formalized IBM's Web privacy policies. Mr. Singer is a member of the Advisory Board of the World-Wide Web Consortium. He is also co-chair of the Web and Society track for the Tenth International World-Wide Web Conference (WWW10), and was a member of the program committee of the 2000 Conference on Computers, Freedom, and Privacy. David is also one of the authors of the PICS (Platform for Internet Content Selection) Recommendation. Mr. Singer was the author of the OS/2 Gopher client, and ran IBM's first Internet Gopher and Web sites. He was also a member of the winning team at the first Internet Bowl (at Fall Internet World 1995). In the 1990s, he built and maintained IBM's gateway to Usenet. Mr. Singer joined IBM in Boca Raton, Florida, in 1976, working on the Programmable Communications Subsytem for the Series/1. He received his Bachelor's in math and Master's degree in computer science at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
