***POST-PROGRAM SUMMARY: CHALLENGE-THE-EXPERT: WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 28, 2001

"Challenges & Issues for Mega Web Site Development" By Dr. Willy Chiu, Vice President, High Volume Website Design, IBM Corporation

Willy Chiu, Vice President, High Volume Web Sites for IBM's Software Group, discussed the challenges and best practices of building mega web sites at the Center last Wednesday. In his current role, Dr. Chiu has created a focal point organization for High Volume Web site technologies, including customer engagement capabilities, site prototyping and performance evaluation, and tool development for analyzing site performance.

Dr. Chiu stressed to the audience that when developing a mega site (planned for more than 20,000 concurrent users) to follow a development cycle of first evaluating its infrastructure, determining the workload patterns, and then designing, building and testing. He stressed the importance of optimizing the system's scalability. Bursty traffic loads are common among the top eBusiness sites, and "these traffic spikes can be deadly" to a non-scalable system, he explained.

The Center would like to thank Dr. Chiu for lending his expertise and for and the knowledge exchange with the audience participants.

For more information on building mega web sites, four white papers are available from IBM (http://www.ibm.com/devloperworks/library/hvws) on the following topics:

1. Design for Scalability
2. Planning for Growth
3. Design Pages for Performance
4. Web Site Personalization available at

A full write-up of Dr. Chiu’s talk will be available on the Center’s website. For further information, contact the Center’s Director of Communications:

***PUB TALK: THURSDAY, MARCH 8, 2001
"A NEW DIMENIONS OF eCOMMERCE: COMBINING ADVANTAGES OF ERP DATA MANAGEMENT WITH VR PRESENTATION TECHNOLOGIES"

By Ms. Ann M. Miller, Research Scientist & Mr. Boris Otto, Project Manager, Fraunhofer Institut fuer Arbeitswirtschaft und Organisation (Institute for Industrial Engineering)

The Pub Talk will address solutions to eBusiness systems. Fraunhofer IAO established the Interpret project to address two challenges of eBusiness systems. The first challenge addresses the integration of different applications. Internet-based B2B applications need to be capable of leveraging the advantages of a redundancy free, high quality business information as provided by common enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems. Many standardization initiatives has emerged over the last several years. However, integration is still the most significant cost factor in IT projects.

The second challenge is the increased expectation users have on how product information is presented via the Internet. Today, it is not enough to provide a customer only with a short description and technical information. Customers expect detailed product information, advice on product requirements, and enhanced product presentation. Within the Interpret Project, different market scenarios are being developed to address these challenges. One scenario covers the integration of an SAP R/3 system with a VRML shop application. Users can walk through different rooms and view 3D product presentations. Detailed product information is displayed and the data is extracted from an SAP R/3 system in realtime.
