***Think Tank Session
"P2P: The Next Generation of Pervasive Technology"
TUESDAY, MARCH 27, 2001
8:00am - 3:00pm By invitation only. No fee. See below for possible participation.
DESCRIPTION
At the Center's invitation-only Think Tank Session, 25 thought leaders will represent established and
innovative smaller companies involved in the P2P space. During this fully-facilitated Session, participants
will brainstorm and contribute to a discussion on the future 9- to 12-month P2P market opportunities for
the enterprise with a focus on:
* Enterprise P2P applications for today and tomorrow.
* The expansion of P2P into pervasive/embedded computing.
Presentations will be delivered, followed by the opportunity to build and exchange knowledge. Those
attending benefit by gaining insights into upcoming market developments and networking with fellow
executives for business opportunities.
This Session will be facilitated by Mr. George Sidman, Chair, Technology Council & Think Tank
Facilitator, Silicon Valley World Internet Center; President, Monterey Network Center.
P2P WORKING DEFINITION
For the purposes of this Think Tank Session, the following P2P definition will be used. P2P refers to
networks of collaborating machines in which one or more of the following characteristics are prominent:
* The network relies on the active collaboration of edge-of-the-net devices (i.e.,
end-user PCs, cell-phones, PDAs, game boxes). That is, the peers benefit
directly from the participation of other peers rather than just from the server.
* Participating machines in the network act in some sense as both clients and
servers.
* Users of a P2P application are aware of each other. That is, the P2P network
creates a sense of a crowd.
PROGRAM
SESSION I: PRESENTATION & DISCUSSION: P2P FOR THE ENTERPRISE: MARKET OPPORTUNITIES, ISSUES &
CHALLENGES FOR TODAY & THE NEXT 12 - 18 MONTH MARKET
By Dr. Stephen L. Burbeck, Senior Technical Staff Member, Software Group Emerging Technologies, IBM Corporation
Click here to view Mr. Burbeck's presentation in PDF format.
( Adobe Acrobat Reader is needed to view this document)
Guiding Questions
* How do enterprise users view P2P today? And, how will P2P expand into pervasive/embedded computing tomorrow?
* What kinds of new business opportunities exist in P2P computing that industries envision?
* What is or will be the main challenge to implementing a strategy for P2P in the enterprise? Other challenges?
* It is assumed that P2P will reduce costs and companies will be able to more efficiently tap the power of their own computing
resources. Is the efficient tapping of CPU power to reduce costs less important than the productivity gains of P2P collaboration, file
sharing, and instant messaging within the corporation?
* Nonetheless, will systems administration be an important issue?
SESSION II: PRESENTATION & DISCUSSION: P2P APPLICATIONS FOR THE ENTERPRISE
By Mr. Leon Guzenda, Chief Technology Officer, Objectivity
Guiding Questions
* What are the visions and expectations for P2P from enterprise users?
* What applications will enterprise users need/ask for most?
* Do you see new requirements/needs emerge over the next 12 months?
* What linkage exists between P2P applications and enterprise portals?
SESSION III: PRESENTATION & DISCUSSION: P2P AND PERVASIVE/EMBEDDED COMPUTING
Guiding Questions
* Today, P2P is primarily a PC phenomena. Will P2P become more important in the pervasive/embedded computing space?
* How will the evolution of P2P in the PC space influence the subsequent development in the pervasive space?
* In what ways will P2P expand into pervasive/embedded computing tomorrow?
SUMMARY & CONCLUDING OBSERVATIONS
Guiding Questions
* What are the top challenges and opportunities for P2P for today & tomorrow, the next 12-18 months?
* Which types of companies are strategically placed to take advantage of these opportunities?
* What types of companies will need to emerge to fill P2P applications for PC and pervasive/embedded computing?

***PRE-PUB TECH DEMO & PUB TALK: THURSDAY, MARCH 29, 2001
"STATE OF MACHINE TRANSLATION & IBM'S WEBSPHERE TRANSLATION SERVER"
By Mr. Dennis King, Manager, Language Technologies, Tools and CTI Voice Systems, IBM Corporation
The Internet is a global medium, but will not create global communities until we break the language barrier. As the infrastructure for
Internet access in Europe, Asia, and Latin America continues to grow, the number of non-English speaking Internet users will
overcome the number of English speaking Internet users in short time. Yet, by some accounts, greater then 70 percent of the web
sites on the Internet do not address more then one language. This is primarily because of the cost and availability of professional
translation. At this Pub Talk, Dennis King, will address the use of Machine Translation, specifically, the IBM WebSphere
Translation Server, to address these global needs. This will be a realistic presentation about what MT can and cannot do, and
where it should be used, and where it should not be used.
A pre-Pub Tech Demo at 4 p.m. will allow those interested to get a hands-on demonstration and learn more about IBM's
WebSphere translation server.
ABOUT DENNIS KING
Dennis King is a member of the senior management team for IBM Voice Systems and has responsibility for products in the areas of
language technologies, tools, and CTI. In his 20 year software engineering career with IBM, his background has been in product
development in the areas of operating systems, large scale transaction processing, application development tools, Internet
middleware and tools, voice, CTI and Machine Translation. Mr. King has a BS in Computer Science and Mathematics from the
State University of NY at Albany and an MS in Computer Science from Polytechnic Institute of NY in Brooklyn.
