Enterprises are challenged with accommodating new modalities for
eBusiness-- wireless, voice-over-IP (VoIP), mobile -- all demanding
support, infrastructure, and management systems. Beyond that, there
are demands for increased customer care and Customer Relationship
Management (CRM); partnership management; Supply Chain Management
(SCM), and other areas.
How do enterprises keep up with these demands? To outsource or
not to outsource? This remains the big question for enterprises
under pressure to compete in an increasingly fast-paced business
world. Who has the bandwidth, the expertise, and the necessary applications
to support these new modalities? In addition, is it cheaper, better,
faster to do this all in-house or to outsource? These and other
questions will be addressed by the panelists during the first 30
minutes of the two-hour program. The remainder of the time will
be a facilitated, interactive knowledge exchange between the audience
members and the panelists.

Join us this Thursday, August 23 to welcome Cable & Wireless as
the newest Executive Sponsor of the Center!

prowess, its significant customers, commitments and benefits to
those customers. Dr. Raaen will also share the global map of Cable
& Wireless IP network and discuss global hosting and eSolutions.
ABOUT MARGUERITE RAAEN
Dr. Marguerite Raaen is responsible at Cable & Wireless for 250
informational and commerce Web sites, plus Web Tools and Web Applications
for customers in Japan, Europe, the United States, and the United
Kingdom. Previously, she was Vice President of Business Development
at Metiom where she was responsible for directing the firm's business
development efforts. Dr. Raaen joined Metiom from IBM where she
held various senior level management positions in sales, marketing,
product development, and research. As manager of IBM's Emerging
Technologies department, she led a distinguished group of PhDs in
exploring new technologies for IBM's top customer accounts. Her
work in expert systems and intelligent agents led to several joint
industry engagements for IBM. Dr. Raaen and her worldwide team in
IBM's CIO's office improved IBM.com by introducing a new, self-service
design for Contact IBM. The initiative, the result of data gathered
from thousands of international eMails and customer trials, dramatically
cut the cost of handling over 50,000 monthly customer eMails, and
led to new customers for IBM in eMail management, data mining, and
web self-service. Dr. Raaen holds several degrees in psychology,
education, and computer science. She has authored two books and
120 papers. In 1999, she and her teammates won a patent for IBM
in Natural Language Processing/Categorization technology.

***THINK TANK SESSION: WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 29, 2001
"Driving mCommerce into the U.S. Market: Who is Leading Whom?"
8:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. Invitation-only.
For possible participation, see below.
The explosion of mobile communications in Europe and Asia has
lead to speculation about when and how the U.S. market will embrace
similar trends and jump aboard the mCommerce wagon. As a follow
up-program to the Center's Think Tank Session on mCommerce on June
27, 2001, we are coordinating a session focused specifically on
the driving factors behind mCommerce in the United States.
* Are those key factors technological? Social? Standards-based?
* What actual elements need to be addressed before we see mCommerce
take off in the U.S. market?
* What is the timeline for benefiting from the business opportunities
in mCommerce?
POSSIBLE PARTICIPATION
For possible participation, please send your name, title, company
name, email address and telephone number along with a bio to:

"IBM CueVideo"
By Dr. Arnon Amir, Research Staff Member, IBM Almaden Research
Center
Open to the Public. No fee. 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. Pub Talk at 6:00 p.m.
The IBM Almaden Research Center has developed IBM CueVideo, which
provides video and speech indexing, retrieval and advanced browsing.
It is a server-client architecture, integrated with multimedia streaming
and advanced video browsing. Its speech retrieval capability is
not only speech recognition (ViaVoice), but also combines phonetic
retrieval of out-of-vocabulary words, sound-like words, and words
missed by the speech recognition. The people and markets that are
probably interested in this include Web content creators, broadcast
news, remote education, media content consumers in various industries.
The Cue Video team is looking for partnerships with consulting
and services companies that would integrate CueVideo into their
content management and knowledge management solutions. In addition,
a CueVideo Toolkit is available for evaluation and licensing via
Alphaworks (IBM's prototyping Web site) or directly from IBM Almaden
Research Center.
