This Interactive Panel Discussion is a follow-up program to the Think Tank Session on voice-driven enterprise applications that took place at the Center on September 13, 2000. A panel of experts from the Think Tank Session and others will be discussing the deployment of voice and speech-recognition technologies and applications for consumers and enterprises.

PANEL

Moderator:
Bryan Mekechuk, Chief Technology Officer & Co-Founder, VOCI CORPORATION (http://www.vocicorp.com)

Panelists:
Jack Chang, President & Chief Executive Officer, BLUE SILICON (http://www.bluesilicon.com)

Jeff Kunins, Manager, Developer Products & Evangelism, TELLME NETWORKS, INC. (http://www.tellme.com)

Bryan Michael, Director of Developer Program, BEVOCAL, INC. (http://www.bevocal.com)

Richard Swan, Director, Director, Corporate Research Center, SAP LABS, INC., PALO ALTO (http://www.mysap.com)

Foad Vafai, Product Manager, International Products, NUANCE COMMUNICATIONS (http://www.nuance.com)

DESCRIPTION

Speech has long been the "holy grail" of human-computer interfaces in pop culture. From "Star Trek" to Disney World's "Home of the Future," we have always expected voice to be the ultimate way we would desire to interact with our automated assistants. Two aspects turn out to be true. First, that powerful speech-driven applications are a reality today. Second, that voice is not the "ultimate interface" for all applications; designing effective voice user interfaces presents real challenges that are distinct from those in the visual realm. In the past 12 months, a new breed of companies, and consequently new markets, have sprung up around the convergence of "Voice" and "the Web." These companies capitalize on 1) recent advances in pure, speaker-independent speech recognition that enable a broader class of commercial-grade applications, and 2) on the massive global investment companies have recently made in "Web-ifying" their backend infrastructure. There has been an emergence of companies that deliver a range of both consumer and corporate services.

Traditional Web services use technologies like Perl, ASP, or WebSphere to dynamically generate HTML by executing database queries and other logic on the server. The emerging VoiceXML standard brings this paradigm to the phone, giving developers an easy, integrated way to deliver a voice-enabled version of their services that completely leverages their existing Web investment.

An interactive dialogue between the panelists and the audience participants will focus on voice technologies and applications for the next 12-18 month markets.

***CHALLENGE-THE-EXPERTS PANEL: MONDAY, OCTOBER 30, 2000 "LEGACY SYSTEMS IN THE NEW ECONOMY: CHALLENGES & INTEGRATION"
6:00 - 8:00 p.m. Limited to 60 participants.
Registration recommended. Open to the public.

DESCRIPTION

Your company's legacy system may have served you well, however, it is time to move on. But, what is the state of your legacy system? Is it well known, clearly documented, supported by knowledgeable people, and functioning perfectly within your business? The answer to these questions is usually no. Speaking of moving on, where did all the knowledge embodied in the development and maintenance staffs go? The documentation that existed in the beginning is most likely out of date; was it inadequate from the start? Are there clear well-documented interfaces to data and process invocation? And, is that changing also? Is the data in a single well-structured database, or is it scattered across many, and even worst, across many database technologies? Is there a clear view of the future, one that can direct your development? Is the automation that currently exists only in the minds of the managers really a frantic manual exercise by dedicated members of the staff? Have you considered how your company is going to test?

These and other serious questions will be the subject of the Challenge-The-Experts Panel. Come and interact with -- and challenge -- the people who have suffered and learned!
