***SUMMARY OF: PANEL DISCUSSION: WEDNESDAY, MAY
10, 2000
"ePROCUREMENT AND THE FUTURE OF INTERNET TRADING COMMUNITIES
/ ONLINE EXCHANGES"
Sixty-five participants were at the Center for a stimulating andinteractive
panel discussion on the future of Internet trading communities last
Wednesday. The Center acknowledges the excellent facilitation provided
by Mr. George Sidman. We would like to thank Mr.Sidman and
the panelists for sharing key insights on this topic.
MODERATOR
George Sidman, Founder & President, Monterey Network Center
(http://www.montereynet.net)
PANEL OF EXPERTS
Mr. Kenneth Campbell, CEO, Centegy Corporation (http://www.centegy.com)
Mr. Bob Jewell, President, PFN, Inc. (http://www.pfn.com)
Mr. Mark E. Palmer, Executive Vice President, Business and Legal
Affairs,
NextSet Software, Inc. (http://www.nextset.com)
Dr. Cosimo Spera, CEO, Saltare.com (http://www.saltare.com)
During the two-hour interactive panel discussion, the panelists
and audience members identified key issues facing companies and
Internet trading communities in the next 12-18 months. Below
is a summary.
GENERAL ISSUES, CHALLENGES, AND OPPORTUNITIES
* Definition of the "marketplace" needs to be clearly
defined. Specifically, what is a public and a private marketplace
and how are they merging?
* Vertical trading exchanges will grow, some will fail, but
they will not stop on just purchasing, but will be trading all types
of information.
* Securing partners is key for the survival of public exchanges.
* To become more credible to the business community, vertical
exchanges need to be complemented by horizontal exchanges, comprised
of financial institutions which are already established and reputable
organizations.
* Significant market players will need to deploy their own
exchanges. Specifically, there is a need for existing models built
on open standards, which, in turn, bring and create value.
* The Internet has not been built to handle structured data,
thus, does not support data communications. Need to have EDI-related
services over the Internet. The network needs structure and
intelligence built into it.
* Backend automation is a must, allowing the exchanges to
connect to a company's existing central process for inventory, manufacturing,
etc. For instance, applications for order fulfillment have yet to
be built into the fulfillment process.
* There is a need to build backend integration and leverage
exchanges to grow existing businesses.
* There needs to be a new ways of "thinking" to
accompany the paradigm shift in the industry. This new thinking
will drive value creation.
* Time is needed for people to see the value of trading exchanges.
Eventually this will all balance out with traditional business
values, but we need to allow time for perceptions to mature.
* Social issues are traditionally seen as barriers, costs,
or fears, but technologies enable social issues to become opportunities.
* A push from the market will provide the 'speed' for further
market developments for commercial exchanges. This push will come
from the demand and supply side.
KEY ENABLING TECHNOLOGIES
1. Web-centric/actionable
2. Security
3. Java, XML, EJB - object-oriented technologies
- deployable / complementary technologies
- directory / registries
4. Scalability
5. Asynchronous processes
KEY SOCIAL ISSUES
1. commodification; margin erosion
2. Trust-IP issues
3. Sense of loss of control over your business & customers-new
rules
4. Regulatory / anti-trust / taxes
5. Homogenization of buyers and suppliers and brand retention
FACTORS FOR SUCCESS OF INTERNET EXCHANGES
1. Getting people to see benefits and value - the new "thinking'"
2. Deeper analysis and description of what is needed to participate
3. Propagation of horizontal exchanges
4. Backend automation

***INTERACTIVE PANEL DISCUSSION: WEDNESDAY, MAY 31, 2000
"THE OPEN SOURCE MOVEMENT: A TREND OR A REVOLUTION FOR THE
SOFTWARE INDUSTRY?"
6:00 - 8:00 p.m. at the Silicon Valley World Internet Center
Limit: 60 audience participants.
Fee $10.00
(Payable by cash or check at day of event. No fee to Sponsors.)
Space is limited. RSVP to Venilde Jeronimo, the Center's Director
of Programs, (venilde@worldinternetcenter.com).
Executive Sponsors of and others associated with the Center will
discuss the Open Source Movement. Is open source software
(previously known as freeware) creating a new vision for the
software industry? If so, will it succeed and where
is it going?
The various essays in the controversial 1999 volume "Open
Sources: Voices from the Open Source Revolution" clearly claim
open development builds better software and emphasize that
businesses can leverage freely available software for a competitive
business advantage. The Open Source Movement has rocketed
and divided the software industry. s the widespread adoption of
Linux, Perl, and Apache a trend or a revolution for the software
industry? What about the corporate support given to the Open Source
Movement by IBM, Netscape, and Oracle? Will the opposition
voiced by Microsoft be heard by software developers? Is this
a Microsoft-centric issue or is it a larger issue, calling for new
directions in the future of software development?
Come participate in our open dialogue with our panel on this fast-growing
movement.
Further information in upcoming newsletters.

***THINK TANK SESSION: THURSDAY, JUNE 1, 2000
"BREAKING THE BARRIER: B2B MOBILE COMPUTING --
A DREAM OR A REALITY FOR THE NEXT 12-18 MONTH MARKETS?"
8:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m.
What mission-critical mobile applications will permeate the next
12-18 month B2B markets? What challenges will technologists face
to arrive at these new applications? What factors will define
successful business implementation of today's existing mobile
applications? And, which aspects of mobile business needs
will call for new technologies and applications?
Twenty-five invitation only participants will contribute to defining
the challenges, obstacles, and current and future solutions of real
world case studies in the business realm of mobile computing. During
this Think Tank Session participants will create solutions around
several real world case studies on transportation and financial
markets (tba). The objective of the Think Tank Session
is to delineate key challenges to existing mobile business
cases and to outline technological and business applications as
possible solutions.
Guiding questions for the Think Tank Session:
* Now that we live in a mobile workplace, what mobile applications
and scenarios will will permeate the next B2B 12-18 month
markets?
* More importantly, what B2B mobile computing applications
need to be developed in order for them to become mainstream? Are
there business scenarios we can anticipate?
* What logistical or information problems can now be resolved
in the New Economy's mobile marketplace through the development
of these applications?
* What new technology problems do we face in the mobile marketplace
and which ones can we still not resolve?
* How do we integrate and deliver information from traditional,
centralized communications systems to mobile devices? And
to what extent does the centralized system need to be aware that
users are mobile?
* How can we better implement existing mobile applications?
What are the obstacles?
* What challenges can we expect for the deployment of mobile
applications and how can we prepare to meet and implement them?
