***PUB TALK:   THURSDAY, MARCH 23, 2000
"WIRELESS TOWER OF BABELŠHOW WE GOT TO THIS POINT
AND WHAT IS THE WAY OUT?"
By Stu Jeffery, Vice President, IP Projects, Synacom Technology Inc.

Your wireless phone works fine in your home area of Northern California, but travel to Europe (or even to Kansas) and it may not work.  How did this situation develop and will UMTS 3rd generation wireless remedy this situation? Probably not, but some things are developing that will.  Mr. Jeffery will give his views on this landscape and how it is evolving.

ABOUT STU JEFFREY

Stu Jeffrey has been with Synacom Technology for the last 4 years and has spent the last 10 years working on cellular and PCS wireless technology. Prior to the FCC issuing licenses for PCS, he was part of the Joint Technical Committee (JTC) that attempted to develop an industry consensus for a single PCS standard.  Mr. Jeffrey is a physicist from Ohio State University with and Executive MBA from Northeastern.

ABOUT SYNACOM TECHNOLOGY, INC.

***WIRELESS eSERVICES WORKSHOP, WEDNESDAY, MARCH 22, 2000
"WIRELESS eSERVICES: BUSINESS USERS & TRANSACTION
ASSURANCE ISSUES"

8:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.

This by-invitation-only half-day interactive workshop will identify key market sectors for wireless eServices for the business user for the next 18-36 months, explore specific wireless eServices for these segments, and discuss the integrity of transaction assurance issues, including security and closed loop concerns, among others.

Twenty-five professionals from the wireless community will discuss and brainstorm the following:

Session I:
MARKET SEGMENTS, eSERVICES, & BUSINESS CUSTOMER NEEDS

o  What market segments can we expect to see in the future (18-36 months) to be dominant for wireless eServices for business users?

o  In these market segments, what specific wireless eServices will be needed? In other words, what will be the Killer eWireless applications for these users?

o  And, what does this user actually want?

Session II:
MAPPING TRANSACTION ASSURANCE CHALLENGES

o  What transaction assurance barriers or challenges exist for wirelesseServices?

o  Besides technology and market challenges, what about social/cultural challenges and barriers?

o  Specifically, are these barriers and challenges short- or long-term? And, are they hindering the deployment of wireless eServices for the business user for the next 18-36 months?

o  What solutions are needed?

o  Where are the big opportunities to support the integrity of transaction-based wireless eServices?

Session III:
KEY OBSERVATIONS

o  Given what has been identified and discussed, what are the key observations for the future 18-24 month wireless eServices markets for business users?

Within five years, wireless devices will account for up to 50 percent of the total eCommerce market.  In the U.S. market alone, mobile eCommerce is expected to be up to $500 billion by 2005 and twice that within 10 years. Over 1 billion eCommerce-ready wireless phones will exist within five years.  That large base will help turn mobile phones into a preferred medium for the buying and selling of goods and services. Demand for mobile banking, payments, shopping, entertainment and other applications is real. Soon mobile customers will be able to buy insurance, cars and even houses through their wireless devices.  One of the concerns is that security may hinder the deployment of eServices.

Our panel of experts will focus their discussion on the security dimensions of wireless eServices, specifically, whether security will hinder deployment of eServices and market strategies needed in this area.

***SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT:
SECOND ANNUAL INTERNET CLUSTER STUDY BY JOINT VENTURE SILICON VALLEY NETWORK AND A.T. KEARNEY

As part of the Center's outreach to bring innovative research in the area of Internet market developments to our Sponsors and those associated with the Center, we are working collaboratively with Joint Venture Silicon Valley and A.T. Kearney to distribute a survey for their second annual "Internet Cluster Study."  The results of the study will be presented at a Pub in the near future.  The complete study will also be available for distribution at the Center.

We encourage participation in this study.

ABOUT THE 2000 INTERNET CLUSTER STUDY

The Second Annual Internet Cluster Study by Joint Venture Silicon Valley Network and A.T. Kearney Joint Venture Silicon Valley (JVSV) and A.T. Kearney invite you to participate in our second annual study by completing a brief survey. The study will closely examine company location in light of increasingly decentralized organizational structures. We will also analyze the impact that the rash of merger and acquisition activity will have on Internet Cluster regions as companies grow and consolidate. Understanding these issues will help leaders in Internet Cluster regions and high-tech executives make decisions that will impact economic growth and quality of life in their region.

The questions in the survey have been designed to minimize your time and should take only 5-10 minutes to complete. You can access the survey online at:

 http://www.internetcluster.com.

Also, please invite other colleagues who might be able to add insight to our study.

As a token of our appreciation, we will acknowledge your input by listing your name and company in the final white paper which will be widely distributed to senior executives and government officials in the Internet industry. Thank you in advance for your participation and time.

For further information, please contact Mr. Sophang Lim-You by email
