CEOs FROM THE FAROE ISLANDS, DENMARK AT THE CENTER WITH SILICON
VALLEY EXECUTIVES FOR A ROUNDTABLE DISCUSSION ON START-UP DEVELOPMENT
ISSUES
On March 2 the Center hosted a distinguished group of CEOs from
the Faroe Islands, Denmark for a discussion about what elements
support or hinder a successful startup culture. The CEOs joined
a roundtable comprised of several executives of startup companies

issues concerning the development of start-ups, the challenges faced,
and how these challenges can be overcome. The group from the Faroe
Islands included CEOs from Atlantic Petroleum,Ltd; Atlantic Airways,
Ltd.; Elektron,, Ltd.; Tele, Ltd. Issues addressed included funding,
management teams and staffing, innovation, and the role of partnerships
and collaborative networks in the new Internet economy. The CEOs
remained at the Center for the Thursday Pub and enjoyed discussing
high-tech issues and exchanging .com stories with the Pub attendees.
We would like to thank the Silicon Valley executives who participated

***PUB TALK: THURSDAY, MARCH 9, 2000
"THE INTERNET IN EUROPE"
By John Lindfield, Consul Investment, Invest in Britain Bureau,
By Michael Charlton, Managing Director, London First Centre
By John Campbell, Vice President, International Customer Development,
British Telecommunications (BT)
By 2003, Europe will represent 34% of the world's Web population,
equal to that only of the United States. It will be an online shopping
market worth $19 billion, according to IDC. Much of this growth
will come as a result of the staggering success of the free access
revolution in Europe. The UK is widely acknowledged to be at the
forefront of this growth. At the Pub Talk this week, you will learn
more about the European Internet market and environment and how
to prepare to expand your business to take advantage of this significant
opportunity.
Please note: unlike our usual Pub Talk, this week's Pub Talk will
feature three speakers to discuss Internet developments in Europe
and will last 25 minutes (longer than our usual 15 minute Pub Talks).

***THINK TANK SESSION, THURSDAY, MARCH 9, 2000
"PERVASIVE COMPUTING: FUTURE APPLICATIONS AND SCENARIOS"
8:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.
This invitation-only session will bring approximately 35 participants
in senior decision-making positions for a focused discussion on
current and FUTURE applications and scenarios in the area of pervasive
computing.
Ubiquitous or pervasive computing can bring a high added value
if there exists a seamless integration into complex business scenarios
in the area of logistics, manufacturing, or supply chains. This
includes enabling these devices with different kinds of communication
capabilities (including wireless, human-to-human, machine-to-human,
and machine-to-machine), as well as equipping them with interactive
capabilities and technologies, for instance, voice and speech recognition,
"intelligence," GPS, GSM, and sensors for acceleration,
temperature, humidity, and light.
This Think Tank Session will explore the opportunities, technologies,
and assessment of current, but most importantly, future applications
and scenarios in pervasive computing.

"Security in a Wireless World"

$10.00 fee (payable by cash or check at day of event)

Within five years, wireless devices will account for up to 50 percent
of the total eCommerce market. In the U.S. market alone, mobile
eCommerce is expected to be up to $500 billion by 2005 and twice
that within 10 years. Over 1 billion eCommerce-ready wireless
phones will exist within five years. That large base will help turn
mobile phones into a preferred medium for the buying and selling
of goods and services. Demand for mobile banking, payments,
shopping, entertainment and other applications is real. Soon mobile
customers will be able to buy insurance, cars and even houses through
their wireless devices. One of the concerns is that security may
hinder the deployment of eServices.
Our panel of experts will focus their discussion on the security
dimensions of wireless eServices, specifically, whether security
will hinder deployment of eServies and market strategies needed
in this area.
