***SUMMARY FROM HOLIDAY PUB: THURSDAY, DECEMBER 14, 2000
"WHAT IS THE 'KILLER' APPLICATION FOR
eBUSINESS FOR THE NEXT 12-18 MONTH MARKET?"
The regular Thursday Pub last week was turned into
a Holiday gala with attendance by the Center’s Sponsors and over
150 attendees. At 6:00 p.m., Sponsors of the Center provided their
vision for the future of eBusiness with the overall consensus that
the future of eBusiness stemmed on establishing strong partnerships
and sound business strategies. During the evening, attendees at
the Pub were asked to write down their own vision for the ‘killer’
application for eBusiness for the next 12-18 month market. The clear
winner was voice! There was a tie for second place: a) wireless
and b) ‘no’ killer application for the coming year -- but a year
of shakeout, consolidation, and market stabilization. In the spirit
of knowledge exchange and distribution, the list of ideas for applications
generated during the evening is below.
On behalf of the Center, we would like to thank
our Sponsors, some of whom traveled great distances, for their input
during the evening and most important, for their continuing support
of the Center! Many of our regular Pub attendees joined us as well
as many new faces. We hope you will continue to be with us, starting
with the Center’s first 2001 Pub on Thursday, January 18.
Wishing you all a happy and ‘collaborative’ Holiday
Season!

"GLOBAL eLEARNING: PERSPECTIVES FROM
EUROPE, ASIA, AND THE UNITED STATES"
Open to the public. 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. Limit of 60
participants. Registration recommended.
The projections for global eLearning opportunities
for the academic, government, and corporate sectors are speculated
to growth tremendously over the next several years. The rise of
the Knowledge-based economy, the eBusiness/eCommerce wave, and the
development of Internet-related technologies provide the basis for
this projected growth. What opportunities exist for these various
sectors? Who is the enduser(s)? What solutions are currently available
for deployment? What market needs are currently met and which one
are not? Where are the new opportunities? How will eLearning opportunities
be delivered to the enduser? How do cultural factors impact eLearning
market opportunities? Is online learning different in Europe, Asia,
and the United States? How do these cultural differences impact
the methodology, the content, and delivery of of eLearning solutions?
What about the corporate vs. residential infrastructure? What are
the obstacles?
Our panel of experts from IBM, Fujitsu, and SAP
will discuss answers to these questions, focusing on what components
of eLearning systems and solutions can be ‘global’ and which ones
need to be customized to accommodate the ‘local’ cultural environment.
Net-based infrastructure, technology, standards, methodology and
delivery for content, and business models will also be discussed
between the panelists and the audience participants.

***THINK TANK SESSION: WEDNESDAY & THURSDAY, JANUARY 10 &
11, 2001
"THE KNOWLEDGE ECONOMY & CORPORATE
eLEARNING: CURRENT & UPCOMING DEVELOPMENTS IN THE U.S. MARKET"
All day program. By invitation only. See
information below for possible participation.
The Knowledge-based Economy provides the impetus
for the emerging eLearning industry, specifically, opportunities
for the corporate sector beyond internal training for employees.
As the speed of change in technology and the general business environment
continues to accelerate, companies must take advantage of the new
Net-based infrastructure for learning if they want to maximize success
in the new Knowledge-based Economy. For instance, how can companies
leverage current eLearning efforts into the extended enterprise?
How can a company’s value chain take full advantage of all formal
and informal learning content via the Internet, and in turn, how
is this related to achieving maximum competitive advantage? How
can Net-based infrastructures (public Internet and corporate Intranet)
be best leveraged for learning and sharing knowledge with employees,
customers and suppliers? What are the upcoming key developments
and opportunities and how can companies best leverage themselves
in these areas?
This two-day, by invitation-only Think Tank Session
on eLearning focuses on key market dynamics in the U.S. corporate
sector, including existing players and potential market entrants,
market opportunities and growth potential in this industry, and
future views and challenges for the corporate eLearning industry.
Net-based infrastructure, technology, standards, methodology and
delivery for content, and business models will also be addressed.
A group of 25-30 invitation-only eLearning experts, established
companies, and innovative smaller companies will contribute to this
two-day discussion. Keynotes will be delivered, followed by the
opportunity to contribute as a group and brainstorm in business
and technology breakout sessions.
POSSIBLE PARTICIPATION
We are currently seeking a few participants with
a technical/engineering background who can share their experience
about the current and upcoming technology for course content and
structure as well as infrastructure for the delivery of corporate
eLearning opportunities.
Individuals and companies in the eLearning space
are encouraged to contact the Center's Director of Programs, Venilde
Jeronimo, for possible participation and further information. She
can be reached at (mailto:venilde@worldinternetcenter.com).

***LIVE WEBCAST INTERACTIVE PANEL DISCUSSION: WEDNESDAY, JANUARY
17, 2001
"WHAT’S COMING DOWN THE ROAD IN
OPEN STANDARDS: STRATEGIES AND SOLUTIONS FOR THE NEW ECONOMY"
Open to the public. 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. Limit
of 60 participants. Registration necessary. Further information
below.
In the eBusiness world, a multitude of businesses
and marketplaces are attempting to interact. Pivotal to this interaction
is the existence of a common infrastructure, including a mechanism
to locate software services and to share these services. Key eBusiness
industry standards, such as Extensible Markup Language (XML); Universal
Description, Discovery and Integration (UDDI); Simple Object Access
Protocol (SOAP), and other web-based industry standards are emerging.
What is the degree of importance of open standards
in the expanding eBusiness Economy? What challenges exist for common
standards in this area? Coopetition is seen as a hallmark of the
New Economy. For instance, SOAP, as an open standards-based interoperable
protocol that uses XML and provides a common messaging format to
link together applications and services anywhere via the Internet,
is a result of IBM, Ariba, Microsoft, and other industry leaders
working together. What is the future of industry leaders working
together for common web-based industry standards? Do proprietary
solutions have a place in the future of eBusiness and eMarketplaces?
In what ways can large and small companies as well as industry organizations
assist in bringing greater efficiency for the integration of technology
across and between enterprises? What milestones have been met for
web-based industry standards over the last year and which ones are
still to be achieved? And…now that the market is slowing down and
re-stabilizing with the collapse B2C and B2B companies, what impact
does this have on open standards?
PANEL OF EXPERTS
* Dr. Robert S. Sutor, Director of e-business Standards
Strategy, IBM CORPORATION
* Mr. Allen Brown, President & CEO,
The OPEN GROUP
* SUN MICROSYSTEMS, TBA
* REDHAT, TBA
* INTEL, TBA
