***PUB TALK: THURSDAY AUGUST 31, 2000
"QUANTUM BRIDGE COMMUNICATIONS:
ACCESS AT THE SPEED OF LIGHT"
By Mr. Dung T. Ngo, Director, International
Business Development, Quantum Bridge Communications
5:00 – 7:00 p.m. Pub Talk begins at 6:00 p.m.
Open to the Public. Surprise: Special dignitaries
at the Pub this week.
Dung T. Ngo will discuss delivering next-generation
optical access networking and how certain equipment can be designed
to eliminate the bandwidth bottlenecks that exist in the public
network's first mile. The continued deployment of fiber optic technologies
in the network backbone has both service providers and business
customers excited about the prospect of utilizing the bandwidth-intensive
applications that will change the way we do business. This promise,
however, will never be realized without an optical first mile capable
of effectively delivering these high-bandwidth service offerings
to customers over the most congested piece of the public network.
ABOUT QUANTUM BRIDGE
Founded in October 1998, Quantum Bridge is pioneering
the development of Optical Access Networking equipment that will
enable telecommunications service providers to cost-effectively
deliver high-bandwidth services to business customers. Optical Access
Networking is a breakthrough technology which empowers service providers
with the scaleable, high-speed network required for the cost-effective
delivery of new business services such as VPNs, application outsourcing,
e-commerce and web hosting. By delivering an optical first mile
solution directly to the business customer over a low cost, easily
managed passive optical infrastructure, service providers can finally
deploy next-generation business services at price points that make
sense for their customers, as well as for themselves.
ABOUT DUNG NGO
Dung Ngo is the Director of International Business
Development for Quantum Bridge Communications. Prior to joining
Quantum Bridge, Dung was the Principal Strategist with Deutsche
Telekom Advanced Solutions (DTAS), one of the Center's Executive
Sponsors. Dung moved to the Silicon Valley in November 1997 from
Northern Virginia. His background ranges from software development
to network engineering and strategic planning.

***THINK TANK SESSION: WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER
13, 2000
"VOICE-DRIVEN ENTERPRISE APPLICATIONS"
By invitation only. 8:00 a.m. - 2:30 p.m.
Participation information below.
PROGRAM
Speech understanding and speech synthesis have been
around as a major research initiative for the last 30 years. Recently,
systems have become more accurate, more pleasant to listen to, and
less expensive to implement. Speech understanding has been successfully
deployed in certain contained applications. In addition, the Web
and the VoiceXML portion of the W3C committee are promising relatively
easy ways to adapt web-based interfaces for voice activation. This
is promising a huge expansion in the number of voice-enabled applications.
During this invitation-only Think Tank Session,
twenty-five participants will contribute to defining the user experience
to-date with this technology as well as the best technology and
business approaches for voice-enabling enterprise applications.
SESSION I:
OVERVIEW: THE STATUS & FUTURE OF
VOICE-DRIVEN ENTERPRISE APPLICATIONS
By Mr. Sunil Soares, Program Director
of Product Management, IBM Voice Systems, IBM Corporation
This Session focuses on the
status and future of voice-enabled enterprise applications for the
next 12-18 months market.
SESSION II:
THE USER EXPERIENCE: WHAT WORKS, WHAT DOESN'T, WHAT'S MISSING, &
WHAT'S COMING UP?
Selective companies will present their experience
and strategy with voice-enabled enterprise applications, providing
a basis for group discussion.
GUIDING QUESTIONS
* Which applications are suitable for voice enablement
from VoiceXML and other voice and speech technologies?
* What are the characteristics of a "good"
voice-enabled interface in contrast to a "poor" interface?
* Is the technology effective enough for usage
from remote areas?
* Is voice only for when there is not a computer
around, or will there be full time, mission critical applications?
PARTICIPATION
For those interested in participating and have a
background in the voice technology and/or applications enterprise
sector, please contact the Director of Programs. We are particularly
interested in participation from companies currently using and contemplating
the use of voice technologies and applications.
