***PUB TALK: AUGUST 24, 2000
"THE REVOLUTION IN ELECTRONICS DESIGN SOFTWARE"
By Dr. Horst Salzwedel, co-Founder, Mission Level Design GmbH
&
Fellow, Silicon Valley World Internet Center
5:00 – 7:00p.m. Pub Talk begins at 6:00p.m
Open to the Public
Dr. Salzwedel will address new methodologies and software for design
of complex electronic systems. The complexity of electronic systems
are doubling every 1 and 1/2 years. This translates into a factor
of 100 in 10 years. This implies that using the same design technology
requires twice as many electronic design engineers every 1 and 1/2
years. And…it is not possible to find more engineers, making it
a challenge for organizations to attract and retain talent. This
bottleneck in electronic design can only be overcome by revolutionary,
new design methods and software for electronic design. These issues
of critical importance for the electronics design markets will be
the focus of Horst Salzwedel’s Pub Talk.
ABOUT HORST SALZWEDEL
Dr. Horst Salzwedel is co-Founder of Mission Level Design GmbH.
Since 1994, Dr. Salzwedel has been a Professor in System Theory

Engineer as Systems Control Technology, Inc. He has also been a
lecturer and consulting professor at Stanford University. Dr. Salzwedel

***THINK TANK SESSION: WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 13, 2000
"VOICE-DRIVEN ENTERPRISE APPLICATIONS"
By invitation only. 8:00 a.m. - 2:30 p.m.
Participation information below.
PROGRAM
Speech understanding and speech synthesis have been around as a
major research initiative for the last 30 years. Recently, systems
have become more accurate, more pleasant to listen to, and less
expensive to implement. Speech understanding has been successfully
deployed in certain contained applications. In addition, the Web
and the VoiceXML portion of the W3C committee are promising relatively
easy ways to adapt web-based interfaces for voice activation. This
is promising a huge expansion in the number of voice-enabled applications.
During this Think Tank Session, twenty-five invitation-only participants
will contribute to defining the user experience to-date with this
technology, as well as the best technology and business approaches
for voice-enabling enterprise applications.
SESSION I:
OVERVIEW: THE STATUS & FUTURE OF VOICE-DRIVEN ENTERPRISE APPLICATIONS
By Mr. Sunil Soares, Program Director of Product Management, IBM
Voice Systems, IBM Corporation
This Session focuses on the status and future of voice-enabled
enterprise applications for the next 12-18 months market.
SESSION II:
THE USER EXPERIENCE: WHAT WORKS, WHAT DOESN'T, WHAT'S MISSING, &
WHAT'S COMING UP?
Selective companies will present their experience and strategy
with voice-enabled enterprise applications, providing a basis for
group discussion.
GUIDING QUESTIONS
* Which applications are suitable for voice enablement from VoiceXML
and other voice and speech technologies?
* What are the characteristics of a "good" voice-enabled interface
in contrast to a "poor" interface?
* Is the technology effective enough for usage from remote areas?
* Is voice only for when there is not a computer around, or will
there be full time, mission critical applications?
PARTICIPATION
For those interested in participating and who have a background
in voice technology and/or applications enterprise sectors, please
contact the Director of Programs, Dr. Venilde Jeronimo. We are particularly
interested in participation from companies currently using and contemplating
the use of voice technologies and applications.
