***THINK TANK SESSION DEC. 9TH: TELCOS, INTERNET SERVICE PROVIDERS,
AND INTERNET PORTALS: THE NEW BERMUDA TRIANGLE?"
***************************************
This Think Tank Session (TTS) will explore current and future trends
involving the convergence of technologies and services developed
and
offered by:
o Internet Service Providers (ISPs)
o Internet portals
o Telcos
This INVITATION ONLY SESSION brings approximately 30 participants
in
senior decision-making positions from these areas for a focused
discussion on this issue.
There is an assumption that within a few years, ISPs and portals
will no
longer have separate identities. The TTS will focus on this
assumption
as well as how telcos will be affected. This Think Tank will
focus on
three areas:
SESSION I: WILL ISPs BECOME PORTALS AND/OR VICE VERSA?
Questions to be addressed and discussed include:
1. What are the top challenges facing ISPs (portals)?
2. What are the short- and long-term trends in the ISP (portal)
industry?
3. What role 'should' telcos play? What role 'will' the telcos
play?
5. If the path is convergence of ISPs and portals, what are some
key
enabling technologies for ISPs (portals)? If not, what is the path?
6. How can ISPs (portals) best grow and leverage their customer/user
base?
Is there a new entity on the horizon or a new paradigm that should
be
seriously considered in a discussion on the relationship
between portals
and ISPs?
SESSION II: TRENDS AFFECTING TELCOS
This session will discuss trends affecting telcos against the background
illustrated by the following observations:
o Internet service providers are on the verge of moving beyond
supplying
access to the Internet, into the bowels of computing at small and
mid-sized
businesses.
o Internet access has become a necessity in most small and
mid-sized
companies.
o One of the messages at this year's ISPCon in San Jose is
that ISPs are
evolving into IT [information technology] organizations for these
businesses
o ISPs have an opportunity to move beyond their present limited
access
role and become key service suppliers to the many businesses moving
online.
A total of 1.3 million businesses will add a home page in 2000,
and many
will move into e-commerce.
o 80% of all ISPs will offer e-commerce services
o 50% of ISPs will be offering caching services, telephony
services and
quality-of-service agreements
o 75% of ISPs will be offering VPNs.
SESSION III: CURRENT AND FUTURE BUSINESS MODELS
This session will propose, examine, and discuss several business
models
currently emerging in the industry segment defined by the ISP-Portal-Telco
triangle. It will also address developments in the United
States as
compared to Europe.
