***THINK TANK SESSION ON E-PROCUREMENT, NOVEMBER 17

"Break Those Chains!  Synchronized Supply Chain Management in

the Internet Age:  A Focus on Mid-sized Business Needs and Solutions"

The  upcoming November Think Tank Session (TTS) is on

synchronized supply chain management in the Internet age, with a

focus on mid-size business needs and solutions.

This INVITATION ONLY SESSION brings approximately 40 participants in

senior decision-making positions, including  suppliers and customers,

together for an in-depth and focused collaborative discussion on this

issue.  Specifically, the focus is to delineate the needs and possible

solutions to these needs of supply chain providers and customers.

The TTS discussion covers three areas:

Session I: Aligning Business and Supply Chain Strategy (Needs)

The focus is on synchronized supply chains (new technologies and

the WWW as a supply chain strategy, synchronized operations,

value of supply chain partners) and how companies can better

enable efficient supply chain operations.

- How should companies collaborate with supply chain partners?

- What are the existing business strategies for collaboration?

- Is collaboration a given or are there exceptions?

- How do technology and the Internet become key enablers of innovative

supply chain strategies?

- Should supply chain organizations be restructured and re-skilled to

achieve these goals? If so, in what way?

(II) Collaborating on Planning and Execution

The focus is on the implementation of collaborative planning with

supply chain partners, assessing its enhanced value and whether it

has become a requirement for 'survival.' Three areas of planning

and execution will be discussed:

1. Demand planning

2. Order fulfillment

3. Joint-capacity planning

How to eliminate or substantially lessen the type of incremental

distortion that occurs when each company responds to its

own interpretation of supply and demand?

What is the best approach(s) capable of approximating customer

demand for orders, instead of basing orders on forecasts?

What strategies can be employed for the supply chain to be able to

cut back large or long-lasting fluctuations in customer demand?

(III) Implementing the Right Enabling Technologies.

The focus is on legacy systems issues and implementing new

technologies. The traditional Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP)

Systems are known to be enormously complex and centered around

a single ERP vendor with little impact on supply chain performance.

New technologies are available and often need to be integrated into

existing ERP systems. This often leads to replacement of legacy

(mostly mainframe-based) systems with new architectures that span

the entire company. Three areas of technology advances influencing

implementation will be discussed:

 - Software and Hardware

 - Convergence and Expansion of ERP Systems and Supply Chain

     Planning Software

 - Internet, System Architecture Design, and Business-to-Business

    (B2B) Collaboration
