IBM'S DR. WILLY CHIU TO DISCUSS STRATEGIES FOR BUILDING HIGH-VOLUME WEBSITES AT THE SILICON VALLEY WORLD INTERNET CENTER

PALO ALTO, CA, February 14, 2001 -- IBM's Dr. Willy Chiu, Vice President, High Volume Website Design, IBM Corporation (http://www.ibm.com), will share experiences in building the world's highest volume eBusiness websites at a Challenge-the-Expert Program at the Silicon Valley World Internet Center (http://www.worldinternetcenter.com), Wednesday, February 28, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.. Zona Research, an analysis and strategic marketing company for Internet markets and technologies, recently found in their Q4 2000 B2B Marketplace survey, that two in five IT professionals recognize the need to improve the performance of their websites. Under Dr. Chiu's direction, IBM has developed a breakthrough methodology for deriving transaction performance metrics to build high-volume web site infrastructures with high performance and highly scalable designs. This body of work has been published on IBM's DeveloperWorks (www.ibm.com/developerworks/library/hvws/) to help IBM customers and partners utilize the methodology in end-to-end e-business infrastructure deployments. This methodology, combined with IBM's High Volume Web Site center of competency, provides a focus on creating and propagating best practices for high-volume websites.

In the first part of the program at the Center, Dr. Chiu will cover dynamics such as impact on performance from bursty web traffic patterns. He will also discuss advanced technologies for multi-tier architectures, caching and web page design. Actual website data and examples will be used, including sites for sporting spectaculars, eCommerce, on-line trading and on-line banking. The second part of the program will involve discussion between Dr. Chiu and the audience.

This presentation is aimed at business development and technical leaders who have, or who anticipate having, intense user demand or sites that have high quality-of-service end-user expectations.

Dr. Chiu is currently located at the IBM Center for Java Technology, Cupertino, California. He has been with IBM for over 25 years.
